The Vintage House Book: Classic American Homes 1880-1980

The Vintage House Book: Classic American Homes 1880-1980

Not from Charmaine: I ordered this book because I salvage so much, from recycled wood and old windows to sinks, fixtures and odd appliances that a resource is needed to confirm age/style of my " finds." This book is very useful for that task, and for ideas to remodel or refurbish your home to the correct PERIOD in which it was built.
Description
This is an irresistible trip through the last hundred-odd years of American houses. The author of Classic Railroad Advertising here catalogs thousands of advertisements and documentary photographs from 1879 to 1980 for the Queen Anne mansions, Arts & Crafts bungalows, and Levittown tract houses that have variously been the American dream home, along with the up-to-date bath and kitchen fixtures they boasted. Most appear in their original printed colors, captioned and annotated with architect-style notes, and the chronological pages are sprinkled with new cars and other bits of American consumerism.

Flipping through this amusing, scrapbook-like volume, two things become clear: everything old is new again, and the march of progress can be measured in water closets.
